Designing a Magazine

Part 1: Design Research
It is my first time designing Magazine, therefore I tried to refer some of the examples from Issuu. The examples I referred to are Practical Photography, Lomography, and other types of Magazines such as Fashion, Interior Design, Sports in order to grab some ideas about the arrangement of layouts with the combination of images and content.  

Part 2: Ideas and Concepts
Sketches




Theme: Classic
Color: White as it looks clean
Font: Poplar Standard (Logo), Gill Sans MT (Content), KGPrimary (Headline), Poorich (Page Title) 

Part 3: Crafting
 Placed a background (File>Place) and separated the page into three parts.
Placed the content images.
 Fit it to a column and centralize in at third line. 

 Inserted the content photos. 
Added in some effect (Object>Effect>Drop Shadow and Outer Glow)
P.S The placement of content photos is designed to place on bottom (principles of design-flow)

 Added texts to describe the images (Type>Font>Gill Sans MT)

Inserted the logo at the top-right side. 
Enlarged the logo to fit in 2 columns space. 

Insert the background and page number for each page at head of any other design as it will set a reminder to leave some space for the content. 
Set 4 columns for this magazine as magazine should looks more relax and space compare to newspaper. 

Inserted the editor's photo, signature, position and content as well. 

Adjusted some spacing in between the Editor’s photo and title (approximate 0.5cm). 
Leave some space in between the headline, content and signature. 


Inserted the content photos and placed at the same row. 
Added title, line and pages number. 

Inserted team members’ name as well as their email address. 

These pages were interrelated together with total number of 6 columns. 
Draw the dot line to make distinguish.

Inserted the NEWS photos and then type in summary of the news.
P.S Each photos and content are in the same line as the opposite. 


Added list number and one of the monthly popular photos will be placed on top and in the middle of both pages. 

Inserted the popular photos of the month. 

Inserted each photographer’s name at the corner of their photos respectively. 

Inserted numbers together with each of their description. 

Inserted the photos at the side with parallel line. 

Fit the photos, title and content within the next three columns.  

Placed advertisement in the last page.

Designing a Newspaper


Designing a Newspaper
First Part: Creating Logo and Template 
We went research through online to get some ideas for our logo and theme.We referred to Malaysia’s newspaper, as well as newspaper printed by others countries such as Italy, US, and UK. We realized that those publishers normally used the basic font for their logo due to it is easier to read on it. Moreover, the color that used are not colorful, yet keep it clear and clean. After that we discuss on it and came out some ideas as following. 
Theme: Vintage
Color: Vintage such as deep brown to light brown 
Font: Avatar Bold
Size: 170pt


Part 2: Content Development
1. Cover Page & Main News
Separated the page into three parts, which are masthead, main news and content. Arranged the images and content.

2. Local News
Organized the content part into 6 columns (Layout>Margin and Column) and divided into three parts,
Up: Image for news
Middle: Sub-headline and content for the page
Bottom: Advertisement

Followed by full page advertisement. Advertisement was added and dragged it to fix the full column size.

Horizontal and vertical line was added in this section to give a clear view.

 
Again, ad advertisement was placed to fit into the page at the right.

3. Special Edition

 Looked for several background to make the theme more stand up. The end, we chose to take the Option 3 as it looks more classic and vintage.

 
The background was chosen look dark and dirty, therefore we decided to crop and adjusted the tone in term of soften and brightness in Adobe Photoshop.

 
Applied the lomo camera picture and draw out the lomo type face by using Adobe Photoshop.

After edited, linked the page to Adobe Indesign.

 
Looked for the Valentine or something related to Love background and then adjusted the Opacity to 20% to make sure it won't overshadow.

 
Applied "All Ages" Type Font to Special Edition. 
Applied "Admiration Pains" Type Font to Love.

 
Used back the front page background and then enlarged the background to fit the page.

 
Applied some love background in order to relate it to Valentine. Adjusted the opacity to 20%.

Obtained the lomo camera from one of the online magazine. 
Cut the photo and combined them together from Adobe Photoshop. 
Inserted the combination of various lomo camera and placed in Adobe Indesign.

 
Created various boxes for writing the content.

 
Placed the photo over the white layer.
Adjusted the color tone of the photo.
Inserted the lomo camera.
And then created a headline in Adobe Photoshop.

 Inserted the picture and adjusted the placement and layout.

 Placed the content at the box square and adjusted the placement.

Added in the box on top of the right side and then added in the content.

4. Entertainment
 
In order to catch audience attention, we decided to put comic strip at the left top corner and "horoscope of the day" at the right top corner. Images are resized to fit into the column.

 
We fit in Sudoku and "Spot the difference" at the bottom of the page. 
Images were resized to fit the page.

 
Inserted advertisement at the bottom.

5. World News
 
Added image and content.
Applied "Text Wrap" of the image.
Added the headline.

Again, applied "Text Wrap" of the image.

Added advertisement at the right and bottom.

Started the second page with image, headline and content. 
Added yellow column at the right hand side.

Added contents and continuous with the news on the bottom.

Again, added image, content and headlines.

6. Sports News
 
Upon agreement, the font and structure of the newspaper was agreed by the members of group. This section consist of both images and words whereby the balance is given importance there.

 This was the last page at the back which arranged in six column as one large image on the top and advertisement at the bottom to make it consistent and balance.
Text placed in each columns according to flow based on the news.
The font various depending on sub-head and masthead.
